Valentine High Waist Panty

To be completely blunt, sewing your own panties is a lot easier than it looks. You don’t even need that much fabric or skill. All you really need is a damn good lingerie tutorial (this one haha) and a straight stitch sewing machine. So if you ever wanted to learn how to sew your own panties, keep reading below. I’ve curated a 8-step lingerie tutorial filled with high quality photos, lingerie sewing tips and techniques.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

For this lingerie tutorial you’ll need a panty pattern obviously. Most panties are typically sewn the same way so you can choose pretty much ANY panty pattern you want. For this lingerie tutorial I will be using the Valerie High Waist Panty Pattern. This downloadable PDF pattern is available to purchase through my online shop here. According to the PDF I will need:

  • 1/2 yard of 2 or 4 way stretch fabric
  • 1/4 yard of rib knit
  • 1.5 - 2.5 yards of lingerie elastic depending on your size
  • 1 bow
  • Sewing machine with a zig zag stitch
  • Overlock (optional)
  • Stretch needle; Sizes 75/11 or 90/14

Please note, if you use another panty pattern the required supplies may differ.

GETTING STARTED

Most panty patterns have 3 pattern pieces; a front panty, a back panty and a panty gusset. They will also typically have a 1/4” seam allowance. If your panty pattern does not have a seam allowance, please add one to your panty pattern before cutting the fabric.

Personally I like to cut my fabric using a cutting mat, a 25mm or 45mm rotary cutter and paper weights. If you prefer to cut your fabric with pins and scissors that’s totally okay! Before cutting the fabric, make sure the stretch of the fabric matches the grainline on the pattern pieces. For most lingerie, you want the stretch of the garment to go around the body so the garment can move with you. If you fabric has a 4-way stretch, you want the side with the greatest stretch to match the granline on the pattern pieces.

For this lingerie tutorial I will be using a 2-way stretch heart tulle for the panty body and a 4-way stretch black modal for the panty gusset.

CHOOSING YOUR SEWING MACHINE AND STITCHES

For this lingerie tutorial you will need a basic straight stitch sewing machine and an overlock machine. An overlock machine is not necessarily required for this lingerie tutorial but is helpful. If you do not have an overlock machine and would like to sew along, I would recommend using a stretch straight stitch instead. I will be using both the Brother PC420 and the Brother 1034D sewing machines.

When sewing lingerie you can either use a 3 or 4-thread overlock stitch. Both overlock stitches give you clean seams but the 4-thread overlock stitch uses 1 extra needle giving you 1 extra reinforcement thread and extra durability. The 3-thread overlock stitch is cool for sewing knits but if the fabric you’re using frays easily or if you put too much stress on a seam sewn with a 3-thread overlock, the fabric will un-catch in the threads creating a hole in the seam. With that being said, I will be using the 4-thread overlock stitch for this lingerie tutorial because I prefer the extra durability. Feel free to use whatever stitch works for you!

Aside from a 4-thread overlock stitch, I will also be using a 3-step zig zag stitch. If you don’t know what a 3-step zig zag stitch is, be sure check out my How to sew Fold Over Elastic blog post I wrote awhile back. I go into detail about the difference between zig zag stitches and their uses.

HOW TO SEW PANTIES LINGERIE TUTORIAL

1. Sew or overlock the top edge of the panty gusset.

2. Place the right sides of the front and back panty together. Place the panty gusset on top of the back panty aligning it with the panty gusset seam. Pin all three pieces together at the panty gusset seam.

3. Sew or overlock the panty gusset seam. After sewing ANY and ALL seams, make sure to stretch the seam(s) slightly to ensure you caught all pieces of the fabric.

4. Overlock the side seams with the right sides of the front and back panty facing together.

5. Pin the panty gusset to the front panty. Flip your panty inside out.

6. Zig zag or overlock the right side of the elastic to the right side of the panty waist and leg hems. Pull slightly when sewing. Not sure how much to pull? You want to pull the elastic enough so the fabric slightly gathers as you sew.

7. Flip the elastic to the wrong side of the fabric , and zig zag the waist and leg hems. Reverse stitch when needed.

8. Notch the center of the front panty with a pin, and bar tack the bow. A bar tack stitch is basically a zig zag stitch with a length of zero. By using a bar tack stitch your fabric will not move under the pressor foot while sewing. This allows you to tack a bow in one place. Aside from tacking bows or decorations, bar tack stitches are used to reinforce seams or tack edges often on stress points.
